Congress and other opposition parties to boycott Constitution Day event in Parliament’s Central Hall

New Delhi: Congress and other opposition parties have decided to boycott the Constitution Day celebrations in the Central Hall of Parliament on Friday. President Ramnath Kovind will preside over the Constitution Day event in Central Hall in Parliament on Friday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union ministers will attend the event. The Congress was in touch with leaders of many opposition parties for joining them in the boycott, sources said, adding DMK, Shiv Sena, RSP, NCP, SP, TMC, the CPI, CPI(M), RJD, JMM and IUML. Senior leaders of the CPI, CPI (M), RJD, DMK and the TMC have confirmed that they will not attend the event which is part of the Government’s Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav programme to mark 75 years of India’s Independence.

A senior leader of a Left party said Opposition leaders have spoken to each other and decided to take this action against a Government that has been routinely insulting the constitution. TRS, BJD and YSR Congress MPs are expected to attend the meeting, sources said.
