SC allowed disqualified MLAs to contest in bye-elections

New Delhi: Supreme Court allowed the disqualified 17 MLAs of Karnataka to contest in the bye-elections in the state in November. The Supreme Court delivered a verdict on Wednesday that the 17 MLAs are disqualified as per the then Karnataka Speaker K.R. Suresh Kumar’s ruling at the time of no confidence motion of former Chief Minister H.D. Kumara Swamy.

   In his ruling Speaker said that the 17 disqualified MLAs are not contest at any elections upto 2023. The Supreme Court on Wednesday set aside the Speaker’s restriction on contesting the elections upto 2023 and allowed the disqualified MLAs to contest in the bye-elections, they are also eligible to take Ministerial berths also. The disqualified MLAs are 12 from Congress, three from JD(s) and two are independent. The Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister C.N. Ashwatha Narayana said that disqualified MLAs would join the BJP on Thursday and contest as a BJP candidate.
