Katmandu: The Rashtriya Swatantra Party (RSP) created a new history in Nepal’s parliamentary elections by winning 125 seats out of 165. RSP’s prime ministerial candidate and former Kathmandu mayor Balen Shah won a landslide victory over Oli in Jhapa-5 constituency.

Balen Shah secured 68,348 votes, the highest number of votes ever won by any candidate in Nepal’s parliamentary history. Former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, along with many other political heavyweights, was defeated in this electoral tsunami. On the other hand, Gagan Thapa, who was considered the prime ministerial candidate of the Nepali Congress, also lost to the RSP candidate.

The RSP is leading with over 48% of the votes not only in the FPTP system but also in the proportional representation system. If this trend continues, the RSP is likely to form the Government with a two-thirds majority (about 184 seats) in the 275-member House of Representatives. No party has achieved such a huge majority since 1991.

A historic era has dawned in Nepali politics. The Rashtriya Swatantra Party (RSP), which was formed just three and a half years ago, has created a sensation in the parliamentary elections. It has swept away traditional parties that have been entrenched for decades and has shown an unassailable lead in the results released on Monday evening.
