
Special Courts for POCSO Cases Soon: Supreme Court
New Delhi: The Supreme Court ordered on Thursday the setting up of a special trial court to hear the child rape cases under the POCSO Act. A bench headed by Supreme Court Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, ordered the setting up of a designated special court in each district, to exclusively hold trails of child rape cases, nearly 1.5 lakh cases of sexual abuse against children pending. A bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justice Deepak Gupta and Justice Aniruddha Bose, said that these special courts to be setup under a central scheme, having 100 or more cases of child rape in a district.
The special designated POCSO Court would start functioning within two months from today. The court also directed the centre to submit the progress report on the implementation of its direction on September 26th, 2019, the next date of hearing.
The bench directing the setting up of a special designated POCSO Court in every district to be funded by the Center in its entirety. The central funding would be covered the appointment of the trial court judge, support persons to aid the survivor child, special public prosecutors, court staffs and infrastructure including creation of child friendly environment and vulnerable witnesses.
