New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi suggested on Thursday to the students of JNU that National interest should not be compromised for individual ideologist and thoughts. Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled a statue of Swami Vivekananda on JNU Campus.

Modi urged students to develop campuses as platforms for cohesive and inclusive debates. One thing that has harmed the democratic setup of our country is giving priority to one’s own ideology rather than the interest of the Nation, Modi said. Modi urged students to imbibe the thoughts of Swami Vivekananda whose main focus, he said, was to make India a great nation and global power. Modi said one should be flexible in giving priority to national interest and solely follow individual thinking.

One can take a glimpse at history that in times of adversity, people of different ideologies came together. People of different ideologies came together under Gandhiji’s leadership and they fought together as there was a common cause, Modi said.

It was witnessed during emergency also. I was part of that movement RSS, Jena Sangh, Communists, several people belonging to JNU had also joined hands and fought together for national interest, he added. while the event was on, many students who had been protesting at the university’s North Gate for two weeks over re-entry of students into the campus, showed their dissent against the PM in the open letter, JNU Students’ Union asked, why did the Centre recommend the appointment of a VC who left no stone unturned in destroying a university that has produced noble laureates.

Why were students called criminals and anti-nationals, while those praising Nathuram Gadse found a high place in Parliament?
