
Modi Reviews Preparedness: Amphan Intensifies into Super Cyclone
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi reviewed on Monday response preparedness as well as evacuation plan of disaster management authorities ahead of cyclone land fall close to Sundarbans on Wednesday. The cyclone Amphan over Bay of Bengal intensifying into a super cyclonic storm. This storm situation expected to have wind speeds 230-240 kmph gusting to 265 kmph, will remain till Tuesday evening, bringing heavy rain falls to coastal odisha and west Bengal. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was also informed during the reviewed meeting that the NDRF has replied its 25 teams on the ground while 12 other are ready in reserve.
According to the IMB Director General Mrutumjay Mahapatra, Amphan will cross the coast between Digha (West Bengal) and Hatiya Islands (Bangladesh) close to Sundarbans on Wednesday as an extremely severe cyclonic storm with maximum sustained wind speed of 165-175 kmph gusting to 195 kmph. Though its extreme damaging impact would be felt in east and west Midnapore, Kolkata, Hoogli, Howra and north and south 24 paraganas will also be severely affected due to wind speed of over 120 kmph and heavy rainfall.
The IMB on Monday said the storm surg of above 4-5 metres above astronomic strike likely to inundate low lying areas of south and north 24 paraganas and about 3-4 metres over the low lying areas of east Midnapore during land fall. The damaging impact of Amphan will be felt in Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Balasore and Mayur bhanj districts in odisha on Wednesday.
