Pollution levels high in Delhi: 32 flights diverted, schools declared holidays

New Delhi: Air pollution levels in Delhi made a huge jump Sunday morning caused the situation very worse in New Delhi. Several flights delayed due to smog in the air. Only 32 flights were diverted from the Delhi airport due to low visibility.

   The Supreme Court empanel declared health emergency in Delhi and in surrounding cities. The schools in Delhi and Noida in U.P declared holidays upto Tuesday. Pollution levels in Delhi crossed the 600 mark. Yesterday it is recorded 407 mark. The air quality index rose to 625- enveloping the city in thick blanket of haze. It made breathing difficult and played havoc with air and road traffic. Pollution levels in Delhi and neighbouring areas are also very high.  The Supreme Court is expected to take the matter tomorrow.

    Delhi Chief Minister Aravind Kejriwal called the situation the unbearable. He also said the people of Delhi were suffering for no fault of theirs. He urged the centre to take immediate steps to provide relief. The State Government will support Centre in all initiate. Supreme Court is expected to take up a report from the Environment Pollution Control Authority on Monday. The Supreme Court take up a report EPCA on Delhi air quality and pollution caused by stubble burning in the neighbouring states of Punjab and Haryana.  The pollution control board has asked the Court to issue directions to NCR states to take steps to stop burning of wastes, toxic emissions from industries and dust from construction sites.

   Delhi is starting the odd-even road rationing scheme from tomorrow, which will run till November 15th. Under this scheme vehicles with odd and even numbered registration plates will run on odd and even days of the week. Pollution in the capital region was declared a public health emergency on Friday by the EPCA.

    All government and private schools upto 12th standard in Ghaziabad, Noida and Greater Noida will remain closed upto Tuesday, said officials on Sunday.
