The 2026 assembly election campaign in Tamil Nadu has officially begun. The ruling DMK party has further heated up the political atmosphere by releasing its election manifesto. In this manifesto, several key schemes were announced to attract women voters. In particular, women from families not falling under the income tax bracket will be provided with a one-time coupon worth Rs. 8,000 to purchase household appliances under the ‘Illatarasi’ scheme.

He also announced that the monthly financial assistance given to female heads of households, which is currently Rs. 1,000, will be increased to Rs. 2,000. The DMK has also given priority to farmer welfare. It promised to increase the support price of paddy to Rs. 3,500 and the price of sugarcane to Rs. 4,500 per ton. It said that modern pump sets without meters for agriculture would be provided free of charge.

As part of social security, the manifesto stated that the pension of the elderly and widows would be increased to Rs. 2,000 per month and the pension of the disabled to Rs. 2,500. Attractive promises were also made for the youth and students. It said that the Chief Minister’s Breakfast Scheme, which is currently being implemented from class 1 to 5, would be extended to class 8. It promised to distribute free laptops to 35 lakh students pursuing higher education.

In the health sector, it was announced that the insurance coverage under the Chief Minister’s Health Insurance Scheme would be increased to Rs. 10 lakh and the eligibility income limit for the scheme would be increased to Rs. 5 lakh per year. He promised to build 10 lakh new houses in five years through the Kalainjar Kanavu Illam scheme. While polling is scheduled for April 23rd in Tamil Nadu, the counting of votes will be held on May 4th.
