EC to hold Maharashtra Legislative Council polls on May 21st

New Delhi: The Election Commission announced biennial elections to nine Legislative Council seats in Maharashtra on Friday. The Assembly Council polling will be held on May 21st.

The schedule of the elections, differed earlier due to the lock down, will allow Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to become a member of the State Legislature before the May 27th deadline to remain in his post. The EC said that it would take review next week and decide the biennial polls to 18 Rajya Sabha seats as well elections to Legislative Council seats in AP, Bihar, U.P and Telangana.

The EC meeting held on Friday, comprising CEC Sunil Arora, who joined from the US via video call, along with Election Commissioners Ashok Lavasa and Sushil Chandra. EC reviewed the suitability of conducting Legislative Council polls in Maharashtra.
