Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren was arrested by ED

New Delhi: Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren was arrested by ED officials at 9.33 pm on Wednesday in alleged land scam case. The ED officials Hemant Soren into custody in the morning after questioning for seven hours and arrested him.

Before arresting ED took Hemant Soren to the Governor and tendered his resignation letter. The Governor accepted his resignation immediately. Jharkhand Transport minister Champai Soren will sworn-in as new Chief Minister Jharkhand. A Chief Minister can be arrested under the anti-money laundering rules if he evades summons thrice.

Hemant Soren had evaded seven summons for questioning in an alleged money laundering case linked to the ₹ 600 crore land scam, was anticipating arrest for a while.  On Wednesday, he held a meeting with MLAs of the ruling alliance where the question of his successor was discussed.

ED arrested 14 people in the case, including 2011-batch IAS officer Chhavi Ranjan who served as the director of the state Social Welfare Department and deputy commissioner of Ranchi.
