Veteran singer Vani jayaram found dead at Chennai home

Chennai: Renowned Play back Singer Vani jayaram (78) passes away on Friday at her residence in Haddows Road, Nungambakkam in Chennai. She was found dead with an injury on her forehead at her house; police registered a case and sent body for postmortem to Kilpauk Hospital. She was conferred with the Padma Bhushan award the third-highest civilian award this year
Vani Jayaram’s husband died a few years ago and she used to live alone in her apartment in Chennai. Reports are that the singer’s maid turned up for work today. When she did not get any response despite repeated calls, the maid is said to have alerted her relatives who then informed the police. According to reports, the cops apparently broke open the door and found her dead in the apartment.

Vani jayaram collaborated with some of the biggest composers across various industries and delivered evergreen chartbusters. She contributed near 10K above songs in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi, Urdu, Marathi, Bengali, Bhojpuri, Tulu and Oriya to her credit. She has performed extensively in the country and across the world. It is to be noted that she has won National Film Awards for Best Female Playback Singer thrice. She has also received State awards from Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Gujarat, and Odisha

Vani jayaram recently completed 50 years as a professional singer and had recorded more than 10K songs. The national award-winning singer worked with several musicians across the country. She has worked with legendary composers including MS Viswanathan Ilaiyaraaja, RD Burman, KV Mahadevan, OP Nayyar and Madan Mohan, among others. Former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa was among those for whom Vani jayaram has sung.

She started career as play back singer in a Tamil film Apoorva Ragangal  in 1976. Later, she sung in all South Indian languages and Hindi also. She received Nation Award for the films Apoorva Ragangal (Tamil), Sankarabharanam (Telugu) and Swathi Mutyam (Telugu).
