British-era bridge collapsed in Gujarat: 152 died

Ahmedabad: British-era Bridge Morbi in Gujarat collapsed on Sunday evening caused to the death of 152 people. At the time of bridge collapse there are nearly 500 visitors are on the bridge.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a financial assistance of ₹ 2 lakh each to the families of the victims who is in Gujarat. The State Government has announced a compensation of ₹ 4 lakh to the family members of each of those who died in the accident and ₹ 50,000 for the injured.

After collapsing the bridge all visitors fell into Machchhu River in Gujarat and died 152 people and missing 100 people, 177 people rescued so far. Around 500 people had congregated on it to perform some rituals for the Chhath puja. The bridge over the Machchhu river had been shut for seven months for renovation. It was reopened to the public on the eve of Gujarat New Year on October 26th.

A rescue operation was quickly launched following the bridge collapse, with five teams of NDRF reaching the spot. Later, the army, navy and air force were also into action. About 19 people have been admitted to the hospital with serious injuries, officials said, adding that the rescue work is being carried out using boats.

Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi, in a press briefing this morning, said that a criminal case has been registered and a five-member high-powered committee is probing the bridge collapse. The rescue teams and officials worked all through the night, he said.
