New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi described Team India former Skipper M.S. Dhoni as “a Phenomenon” and an important illustration of “The Spirit of new India where family name does not make young people’s destiny” in a two page letter addressed to the cricket icon on Wednesday.

The letter took note of the Ranchi a small town background of M.S. Dhoni and maintained that his success would have enthused many youngsters from modest backgrounds. Your rise and conduct gives strength and inspiration to crores of youngsters who like you haven’t been to cushy schools or colleges, neither do they belong to illustrious families but they have the talent to distinguish themselves at the highest levels, where we come from does not matter as long as we know where we are headed, this is the spirit that you have exuded and inspired many youngsters with, Modi wrote.

Dhoni posted the letter on twitter. Former skipper M.S. Dhoni (39) who announced his retirement from International Cricket on August 15th said, “An Artist, Soldier and Sportsperson what they crave for his appreciation, that their hardwork and sacrifice his getting noticed and appreciated by everyone. Thanks PM @Narendra Modi for your appreciation and good wishes”. The wicket-keeper- batsman had skippered India to two World Cup Triumphs in 2007 (T20) and 2011 (ODI). During his playing career, Dhoni was often described as King of Cool for his level headedness in crunch situations.

The letter underlined this aspect of his personality. No matter what hair style you sported, you calm head remained the same in victory or defeat, which is very important for every youth, Modi wrote, referring to his hair do that changed over the years. “I would like to also mention your special association towards India’s armed forces. You’re most happy being among our army personnel. Your concern towards their welfare has always been remarkable”, he further wrote. Dhoni is an honorary Lt. Colonel in the Territorial Army.
