New Delhi: Gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari was brought back to UP’s Banda jail, Police took custody of the 57-year-old BSP legislator at Rupnagar jail on Tuesday to bring him back to Banda prison.

The five-time MLA reached Banda jail, where he was lodged in barrack number 15. “Security personnel have been posted inside as well as outside the jail premises,” Banda jailor Pramod Tiwari said. The UP Police took custody of the MLA at Rupnagar jail on Tuesday to bring him back to Banda prison after completing the formalities. According to reports the convoy entered Banda jail at 4:30 am

The UP government had told Supreme Court that the Punjab government was “shamelessly protecting” the legislator by not handing over his custody to face trial “in 10 heinous cases of murder, extortion, cheating, fraud” and “gangster acts” in the special court for MPs and MLAs in Allahabad.
