New Delhi: Heavy rains battered North India since two days caused heavy loss in Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir and atleast 20 people died in the floods.

IMD has predicted heavy to extremely heavy rain for Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir. The IMD has predicted very heavy rainfall in more than nine districts of Rajasthan, including, Rajsamand, Jalore, Pali, Ajmer, Alwar, Banswara, Bharatpur, Bhilwara, Bundi, Chittorgarh, Dausa, Dhaulpur, Jaipur and Kota.

Water logging led to traffic jams in several parts in New Delhi. The city recorded 153 mm of rainfall in 24 hours, highest in single day in July since 1982. Heavy rain continued in Delhi and its adjoining areas today as well. Several parts of Gurugram also experienced water logging and power outages.

Moderate rain is expected in Delhi that light rain is expected till July 15th. A woman was killed in Delhi when the ceiling of her flat came crashing down on her, while four people died in rain-related incidents in Rajasthan.

A woman and her six-year-old daughter were killed in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar early this morning after their house collapsed due to heavy rain. Three of family were killed in Himachal Pradesh’s Shimla in a similar incident.

Two Army soldiers died in Jammu and Kashmir, after being swept away in flash floods in the Poonch district on Saturday. The annual Amarnath Yatra has been suspended for the third consecutive day today following incessant rains and landslides. About 3,000 vehicles are stranded along the Srinagar- Jammu Highway.

IMD has issued a red alert for seven Himachal Pradesh districts after landslides and flash floods blocked several roads in Shimla, Sirmaur, Lahaul and Spiti, Chamba and Solan.  A portion of the national highway in Kullu district washed away as the Beas River breached the danger mark.

Many roads and buildings in cities and towns remain submerged in knee deep water.Frightening images of the chaos vehicles floating like paper boats, muddy waters gushing into residential areas, structures submerged on the banks by the swollen rivers and land cave-ins – were shared online by people from Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Delhi.

In Himachal Pradesh, landslides and flash floods, triggered by incessant rain, damaged houses, structures and paralysed normal life. Some shops and vehicles were also washed away in flash floods in Manali, Kullu, Kinnaur and Chamba as all major rivers – including Ravi, Beas, Satluj, Swan and Chenab are in spate.

A red alert has been issued for Kathua and Samba districts of Jammu and Kashmir. All schools in Gurgaon and Delhi remain shut on Monday as heavy rain has led to water logging. The Gurgaon Administration has also advises corporate houses to work from home today to avoid traffic jams.

The Delhi Government has set up 16 control rooms to monitor the flood-prone areas after Haryana released more than one lakh cusecs of water into the Yamuna river from the Hathnikund barrage.
