Heavy rains in Maharashtra: 36 dead due to landslides

Raigad: Heavy rains in Konkan region caused 36 people dead, leaving thousands stranded due to landslides and floods in Raigad district. Helicopters are being used to evacuate people from the flood hit regions in Raigad, about 70 km from Mumbai.

According to the Satara Rural SP Ajay Kumar Bansal, twenty people are feared trapped in two locations in the Patan tehsil in Satara district which has been badly hit by rain. 14 people are trapped in four houses at Ambeghar, 10 people are trapped at Mirgaon, inside three houses and rescue work is underway. 32 bodies being found in one spot and four others in another location due to landslides.

Maharashtra is witnessing the heaviest rain in July in 40 years. Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray spoke with the local authorities got information about the incidents. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed anguish in a tweet, over the loss of lives due to the landslide. PM Modi said the situation in Maharashtra due to heavy rains is being closely monitored and assistance is being provided to the affected.

In Ratnagiri district, the heavy rain caused water level to rise as high as 12 feet following 24 hours of uninterrupted rain that caused the Vashishti River to overflow.  Power supply has been snapped in the town and phone connections are patchy and submerging roads and homes. A dedicated Covid – 19 hospital was surrounded by flood waters and patients were seen being rescued in boats.

Two rescue teams from the navy, 12 local relief teams, two from the coastguard, and three from the NDRF have been deployed in the inundated areas. The navy deployed seven rescue teams equipped with rubber boats, life jackets and life buoys to the affected areas, along with a helicopter to airlift marooned residents. Specialist navy divers accompanied each team with diving equipment.
