Migrant workers attack cops at IIT-H: two injured

Hyderabad: Nearly more than 2,000 angry migrant workers attacked on private security and police at the Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad Campus, in Kandi village. The migrant labours had been hired to work on a construction site inside the campus.

The labourers were upset as they were being asked to work when they had not been paid for the past month. They also wanted to go back to their home states. The angry migrant workers pelted stones on the security personnels and police. An ASI and a private security guard received minor injuries in this incident. They also damaged a police vehicle before senior police officers rushed to the spot and pacified the workers. A senior police officer said that both the injured men are out of danger. According to the Sangareddy, DIG S. Chandrasekhar Reddy, the IIT-H new buildings in Kandi has been given to L &T and Shapoorji Pallonji. These companies engaged 2, 354 migrant workers at the construction sites

Work was suspended in the lock down and the labourers have been provided shelter in tin roof sheds at camp of the construction firms. The supervisors of the two construction firms visited the camps on Wednesday morning and asked the labourers to return to work after getting permission to start construction. The workers, who had not been paid for March wages, got up upset and chased away the supervisors. When the workers saw the police men approaching them they started pelting stones.  The police registered a case against the workers under various sections of IPC, disaster management act and the epidemic diseases act.
