New Delhi: The Supreme Court will resume the practice of constituting a single Judge bench on Wednesday to hear pleas for bail and anticipatory bail after a gap of almost 40 years, in cases which carry jail term of upto seven years besides applications for transfer of cases.

Supreme Court rules, 2013, mandated that every cause, appeal or matter shall be heard by a bench consisting of not less than two Judges nominated by CJI. But the rule was amended last year and notified in September. Now the Supreme Court implemented the amended rule for setting up a single Judge bench. The decision for setting up single Judge Bench has been taken so that the Court can take up more number of cases on a daily basis and ensure speedy disposal.
