Swachh rankings: three cities in top ten, AP leads South India

Vishakhapatnam: Andhra Pradesh scripted success story in Swachh Survekshan – 2020 rankings announced on Thursday as three major cities in the state in the top 10 lists.

The cities are Vijayawada, Vishakhapatnam and Tirupati. Vijayawada was adjudged as the forth cleanest city in the country among cities with morethan 10 lakh population, Vizag bagged 9th rank in the same category. Tirupati secured a well deserved 6th rank among the cities with less than 10 lakh population. Andhra Pradesh is the only South India state to have three cities in the top ten lists. Infact, all these three cities bettered their performances compared to their 2019’s rankings i.e. Tirupati (8th), Vijayawada (12th) and Vishakhapatnam (23rd).

 

The other cities/ towns of Andhra Pradesh, which outscored other Indian cities to find a place in the top 100 lists included Rajamundry (51st), Ongole (57th), Kakinada (58th), Tenali (75th), Kadapa (76th), Chittoor (81st), Hindupur (93rd) and Tadipatri (99th). When it comes to the overall national rankings of the urban local bodies with morethan 1 lakh population.

Vijayawada stood in the sixth place in the country, while Tirupati and Vishakhapatnam were ranked 12th and 17th respectively. According to the MD Dr. P. Sampath Kumar, Swachh Andhra Corporation, the Andhra Pradesh has been ranked sixth in SS-2020 in the State wise rankings.
