TRS emerged as single largest party in the GHMC elections

Hyderabad: Telangana Rashtra Samithi emerged as the single largest party in the GHMC elections held on December 1st. The GHMC have 150 Divisions, TRS won only 56 divisions. The main rival BJP won 48 divisions and MIM won 44 divisions and Congress won two divisions only.

The result of one ward has been held back because of pending case in High Court. With this win, BJP has effectively dethroned the Congress as the main opposition in Telangana. It will now work towards making its presence felt in the State Assembly in 2023. Interestingly, the grand show has come just come a week before the TRS Government is set to complete two years in office in its second term. The TRS needed atleast 67 divisions to have its own Mayor without the support of any other party, as it already has 31 Ex-officio votes made up of its MPs, MLAs and MLCs.

The GHMC hung results, AIMIM has emerged as the king maker with 44 divisions and 10 Ex- officio members. The party continued to hold sway in the old city as it held on to its tally from 2016. While, the TRS has 31 Ex- officio members, AIMIM have ten Ex- officio members and BJP have two. The TRS alone has 77 Ex-officio members, including MLAs, MPs and MLCs who reside in Hyderabad and are registered with GHMC. But as many as 46 members’ votes were used in the previous Municipalities and Municipal Corporation elections to win Chairpersons and Mayor Post.
