Kolkata: Former West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee alleged that the “Rulers became killers” and she strongly condemned the attack on the TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee at Sonarpur.

She alleged in her X post about the attack and she said that the BJP was behind the incident. Mamata Banerjee posted on X, “RULERS BECAME KILLERS – shame on you BJP”.

TMC leaders alleged that the protest was politically motivated and accused the BJP of engineering the attack to disrupt Banerjee’s visit. The Congress on Saturday strongly condemned the attack on Abhishek Banerjee and said the deliberate lack of adequate police protection for a prominent opposition leader speaks volumes about the BJP’s politics of vendetta and persecution.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge in his X post strongly condemn the shocking attack on MP Shri Abhishek Banerjee in Sonarpur, as he went to meet the families affected by post-poll violence in the State. The Union and West Bengal Governments must ensure security for all opposition leaders and take immediate steps to prevent such attacks, he added.

Congress general secretary K C Venugopal said the shocking attack on Banerjee is highly condemnable and a clear example of BJP’s politics of hate and violence.

Abhishek Banerjee was roughed up by locals when he visited Sonarpur in South 24-Parganas to meet families of post-poll violence victims, police said. Stones, shoes and eggs were hurled at the MP by unidentified people who even attempted to rain blows and kicks on him, while they shouted thief, thief slogans.
