Cyclone Mandous made landfall near Mamallapuram in Tamil Nadu

Chennai: Cyclone Mandous made landfall around 10.30 pm on Friday and crossed the coast near Mamallapuram (Mahabalipuram) in Tamil Nadu and between Puducherry and Sriharikota, around 1.30 am with a wind speed of 75 km an hour. The cyclone has now weakened into a deep depression over the State and Chennai receiving up to 115.1 mm of rain till 5.30 am.

According to the official sources, streets in the city were waterlogged due to heavy rainfall. However, major damage was averted due to proactive measures by the authorities, officials said. Trees were uprooted on East Coast Road and GST Road in Chengalpattu district as well. Around 200 trees have been uprooted in Chennai. Both districts face power cuts.

All flights were cancelled at the Chennai airport due to bad weather. Three districts are on red alert Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Chennai, and Villupuram. Schools and colleges were already shut in 12 districts of the State, including Chennai.

NDRF teams alerted in ten districts for rescue operations, the Tamil Nadu Government has opened more than 5,000 relief centres. In Chengalpattu district alone 1,058 families have moved to 28 such centres.

In Andhra Pradesh cyclone Mandous affected in South Coastal and Rayalaseema districts. Nellore, Tirupati, Chittoor, Annamaya and Kadapa districts received heavy rainfall and low-lying are affected. The Government took all precautionary measures to reduce the property and live damages. Many rivers and river lets are flooding in the Andhra Pradesh.

According to IMD press release the cyclone would continue to move West-Northwestwards and cross North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining South Andhra Pradesh coasts between Puducherry and Sriharikota around Mahabalipuram during midnight of today.
