Hany Babu Professor held in Bhima Koregaon case by NIA

New Delhi: NIA arrested a Delhi University Professor Hany Babu Musaliyarveettil Tharayil on Tuesday. NIA arrested him for involvement in the alleged conspiracy leading to caste based violence in Koregaon Bhima case in January 2018.

Hany Babu a resident of Gautam Buddha Nagar in UP, was arrested in Mumbai after being questioned over the past few days. He works in Delhi University’s faculty in English Department. NIA in a statement claimed Hany Babu who belongs to Kerala was propagating Naxal activities and Maoist idealogy and was a co-conspirator with the other accused who have been arrested with connection with what has come to be known as the Koregaon Bhima-Elgar Parishat case.

He was arrested as his questioning pointed to his primafacie involvement in the conspiracy, said an officer. He involves alleged incitement of people with provocative speeches during Elgar Parishat organized by activists of Kabir Kala Manch Act Shaniwarwada in Pune on December 31st, 2017, which promoted enemity between various caste groups and led to violence, resulting in loss of life and property and statewide agitation in Maharashtra, said the NIA on Tuesday.

The case was initially probed by Pune police. The NIA took over the case in January; Hany Babu will be produced before the NIA Special Court in Mumbai on Wednesday. The NIA sought his custody for interrogation.
