Modi will become first Indian Prime Minister to Chair UNSC debate

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will become the first Indian Prime Minister to chair a United Nations Security Council open debate that will take place on Monday at 5.30pm via video conferencing. The debate will shine a spotlight on enhancing maritime security.

This will be the first time that maritime security will be discussed in a holistic manner as an exclusive agenda item in such a high level open debate.

India assumed the rotating Presidency of UNSC from France for the month of August. During India’s Presidency, said its Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador TS Tirumurti and UNSC will organise three high level signature meetings on maritime security, peacekeeping, and counterterrorism. Monday’s debate titled Enhancing Maritime Security a Case for International Cooperation.

According to the news agency Russian President Vladimir Putin will be among several world leaders who will participate in the UNSC debate on maritime security to be helmed by PM Modi and the debate which will be broadcast live on the UNSC website.
