Rajya Sabha nodded CAB amid protest

New Delhi: The Union Government on Wednesday secured Parliamentary approval for the CAB-2019 in Rajya Sabha. After a fierce discussion about nine hours on the bill, Rajya Sabha voted 125 in favour of the bill, 105 against the bill.

   Morethan 40 MPs participated in the debate. The CAB which seeks to provide citizenship to non-Muslims who entered the Country from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan till December 31st, 2014, will now go to the President for his assent. The Union Home Minister Amit Shah tabled the bill on Wednesday morning in Rajya Sabha.

  Prime Minster Narendra Modi welcomed the passage of the bill calling it “A Landmark Day for India and Our Nation’s Ethos of Compassion and Brotherhood”. He expressed gratitude to all the MPs who voted in favour of the bill. The bill will elevate the suffering of many who faced persecution for years, he said in a tweet.

  The Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi said that, she was calling it as a dark day in the Constitutional history of India. She also said that the passage of the CAB marks the victory of narrow minded and bigoted forces over India’s pluralism. The bill fundamentally challenges the idea of India.

  Union Home Minister Amit Shah answering to the questions of the opposition, it was a necessitated because of partition of the country and has corrected a historic blunder. The bill makes it much easier for Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians fleeing Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan to become Indians. It also reduces the 11 year long wait for citizenship for non-Muslims from these three countries to five years. He accused the Congress for accepting partition on the basis of Religion and said this bill will give protection to persecuted Minorities from these countries.
