Removing SPG protection to Sonia Gandhi’s family is not vindictive: Amit Shah

New Delhi: The Union Home Minister for Home Amit Shah said that BJP never targeted vindictive politics; it was done by Congress some times. Amit Shah told to the Parliament on Wednesday the SPG cover to Sonia Gandhi’s family is not a vindictive.

   They were placed under full security with CRPF Z+ category. The SPG protection was given only highly designated persons. The SPG was established at the time of Indira Gandhi’s assassination and it was enacted in 1988. The SPG cover was provided to the late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and his family members, when they are under the threat. Soon after the then Governments diluted the SPG rules for four times and extended to others also.

   Now the SPG cover is only to the Honourable Prime Minister only, he said. He introduced SPG amendment bill 2019 and was passed amids a voice of vote on Wednesday. The Congress staged walk out on the SPG cover not provided to the Sonia Gandhi’s family. Amit Shah also said that the SPG cover is only to the Prime Minister, and for his family members who are with him in official residence. The SPG cover is also provided to the former Prime Ministers for five years, after they stepped down from the office.

  The Sonia Gandhi’s family misused the SPG protection in several times for last 20 years, he said. Rahul Gandhi travelled nearly 1, 892 times without informing the security personnel of SPG in the country and 297 times at the abroad tour.
