Veteran Film Director Basu Chatterjee (90) passes away

Mumbai: The veteran Film Director, a master of middle- class Minutiae, Basu Chatterjee (90) passed away in Mumbai on Thursday. Due to old age problems he passes away at his residence, said President of Indian Film and Directors Association Ashoke Pandit.

The Basu makes cinemas on the touching points of middle families and low middle families grievances. Mainly his cinemas dealt with trade unionists, office clerks, Sanskrit teachers, overseas and private secretaries. His films Rajnigandha, Chhoti Si Baat, Chit Chor, Baton Baton Mein, and Katta Metta are celluloid registers of times when money was always in short supply but happiness found a way to bypass it.

The Producer and Director, who worked for the tabloid blitz as a cartoonist, gave Amol Palaker the films (Rajnigandha, Chhoti Si Baat etc.) he is popularly remembered by.

He didn’t deliver blockbusters but stars loved to work with him because he added something meaningful and different to their resume Jeetendra (Priyatama), Rakesh Roshan (Katta Metta), Dharmendra (Dillagi) and Amit Bachchan (Manzil). He started as an Assistant Director; Basu Chatterjee’s Teesri Kasam (1966) being part of his bio- data before producing and directing Sara Akash (1969).
