New Delhi: The Attorney General of India K.K. Venu Gopal declined to give consent for the initiation of contempt against AP CM Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy and his Principal Advisor Ajay Kallam on Monday.

He expressed deep dissatisfaction over the manner in which the letter was written and made public in a press conference. He expressed this opinion while responding to a letter written by Advocate Ashwini Upadhyaya seeking the AG’s consent to initiate contempt proceedings for criminal contempt against AP CM and his Principal Advisor Ajay Kallam. The CM’s Advisor had on October 10th held a press conference and circulated CM’s letter to the CJI among media persons.

The AG said that I am the opinion that the timing itself of the letter, as well as it being placed in public domain through a press conference, could certainly be said to be suspect, in the background of the order passed by Justice Ramana on September 16th diverting pending prosecutions of elected representative to be taken up and disposed of expeditiously. As you yourself have pointed out, there are 31 criminal cases pending against Chief Minister, said Venu Gopal in his reply to the advocate.
