Centre sends Army, NDRF to restore Bengal back on its feet

Kolkata: The Union Government deployed five columns of the Army and NDRF to help state and civic agencies get cyclone ravaged Kolkata back on its feet. The people of the cyclone affected areas are expressing their anger and frustration in neighbourhood and on Government still electricity and water.

Assistance would be required along with a gargantuan effort to restore essential infrastructure and services snapped by cyclone Amphan on Wednesday. The five column of Kumaon regiment were deployed along with the road clearing equipment like payloaders, bulldoggers on Southern Avenue and in Tollygunge, Ballygunge, Rajarhat, New Town and Behala, were hundreds of trees were uprooted and roads blocked due to damage of Amphan. Army support has been called for NDRF and SDRF teams deployed; Railway, Port and private sector, too, requested to supply teams and equipments, said the Home Department.

Adding that it was mobilizing maximum strength in unified command mode on 24X 7 basis for immediate restoration of essential infrastructure and services ASAP. The State’s appeal and Centre’s quick response came amid continuing protests in several pockets of the city over the blackout and dry taps since Wednesday. Officials said trees fell by the severe cyclone storm needed to be removed from the roads first for power and telecom connectivity to be restored.
