Mamata Takes on “Nominated Governor”

Kolkata: The comment of the governor Jagdeep Ghunkhar on Covid-19 cases in Kolkata creates a big gap with the Chief Minister Mamatha Benarjee. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamatha Benarjee on Thursday wrote a five pages letter to governor, protesting against the “Direct Attacks”, he had been making on “An Elected CM” and council of ministers despite being a “nominated” functionally.

Mamatha accused governor of transgressing the constitutional dharma and ignoring the state government’s advice when it was busy fighting the Covid-19. Mamatha’s public letter opened a new chapter in the TMC government’s testy relationships with the governor. Mamatha’s letter on Thursday took exception to the language and the tenor of the governor’s direct attacks on her and her cabinet colleagues and called them an unspeakable and unconstitutional sin.

She also charged governor with holding press meet against the states he heads. And quoted Ambedkar, who held the powers of the governor were “Limited, Nominal and Ornamental”. From last few days, governor questioned that Mamatha’s government on low number of Covid-19 tests and flagged issues like the PDS scam. He has also alleged that the state government is being run in a whimsical manner. And advice it to ensure free movement for the teams sent by the union government to Bengal.

Governor also alleged that he has denied a Covid-19 update since April 08, when state chief secretary Rajiv Sinha meets him last.
