Five states CMs say no to Citizenship Act-2019

New Delhi: Five states ruling of opposition parties are refused not to implement the new Citizenship Amendment Act- 2019 (CAA) in their states. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamatha Benerjee, Punjab Chief Minister Amarender Singh, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh and Kerala Chief Minister P. Vijayan are refusing the new amendment law.

   Kerala Chief Minister P. Vijayan and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamatha Benerjee had launched a scatting attack on the new law. Punjab Chief Minister Amarender Singh said that his Government will not implement the Legislation in the state. Another Congress Chief Minister Bhupesh Bhagal of Chhattisgarh said that the bill was unconstitutional. The Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath expressed the same opinion and he said that he will follow the path of the Congress party’s decision on CAA. He also said that it was a part of the Centre’s politics of distractions to deflect people’s attention from economic slowdown.   

   The Union Home Ministry sources said that state Governments do not have any power to stall implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act in their states. It was enacted under the Union list of the 7th Schedule of the Constitution. In this schedule, 97 items were under the Union list, which includes Defense, External Affairs, Railways, Citizenship and Naturalization in addition to others.
